Requirements and qualifications etc are given at: http://jobs.undp.org/cj_view_jobs.cfm?categ_id=3 or http://europeandcis.undp.org/home/jobs/ Briefly, the positions are: L4: Sustainable Development Adviser This person will be responsible for implementing the 'MDG' (Millennium Development Goals) assessment and reporting of UNDP's MDG Carbon Facility. This doesnt need to be a climate change person particularly (though obviously this will help) - but someone who understands development - and is pragmatic enough not to overcomplicate reporting of the MDGs. This position will need to work with UNFCCC SD initiatives. Formally: The MDG Carbon Facility Sustainable Development Specialist's (hereafter 'the Specialist') main responsibility will be to establish a pragmatic approach to assessing, reporting and promoting sustainable development outcomes from the portfolio of MDGCF projects. The Specialist will develop and implement MDG impact assessment frameworks and tools to support the sourcing, screening, due diligence and reporting on MDGCF projects to ensure all projects in the MDGCF portfolio: meet sustainable development requirements; demonstrably contribute to MDGCF objectives; and are consistently and transparently reported on. The Specialist will achieve this through working collaboratively with international best practitioners of sustainable development assessment and promotion to establish a recognized pragmatic framework for assessing and promoting sustainable development through carbon finance. The Specialist will coordinate with Country Offices, Regional Centres and Head Office staff in order to provide support to the global team of Regional Technical Advisers (RTAs) in sourcing and implementing carbon finance projects. L3: Technical Specialist: Support for the Carbon & Technical aspects of project sourcing, development and implementation - but also expect to undertake some 'medium term' policy work such as industry analysis, guidance in project development etc. Formally: The MDG Carbon Facility Technical Specialist's (hereafter 'the Specialist') main responsibility will be to support the sourcing, screening, and due diligence of MDGCF projects to meet targets. The Specialist will provide information, tools and project reviews to ensure all projects in the MDGCF portfolio: (i) meet carbon regime (CDM, JI or voluntary markets) eligibility requirements, (ii) demonstrably contribute to MDGCF objectives, (iii) and are consistently and transparently reported on. The Specialist will achieve this through effective and systematic reviews (and where necessary, compilation) of project documentation, research and analysis of relevant technical and carbon market information (methodologies and comparable projects), collaboration with Country Office staff and other climate change staff in Regional Centres and Head Office in order to provide support to the global team of Regional Technical Advisers (RTAs). The position is based in the Bratislava Regional Center, and the scope of work is global, covering all regions within UNDP. If you are interested in these positions, please see the requirements on the links above. We are looking for the best candidates for this challenging and interesting programme. Please circulate to all who may be qualified and interested. Separately, by way of information, UNDP continually hosts junior intern positions. Interns are typically in the process of completing their post-graduate degrees, and can provide starting proffessionals with 'hands-on' experience in the international context. Unfortunately these are unpaid. Our next openings for internships in Bratislava (for global work) will be from December 2008. Please forward this information to interested individuals, and send CVs directly to me between 15 October and 15 November. On September 23, the Western Climate Initiative (WCI) issued its recommendations for the design of the WCI regional cap-and-trade program. The multi-sector program covers the largest emitters from each state and province, including energy (electricity, natural gas and heating fuels), industrial emissions and transportation emissions. Measurement and monitoring of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is a foundational piece of the program. WCI Partners agreed that each will begin reporting emissions in 2011 for emissions that occur in 2010. Several entities already will start reporting their GHG emissions in Washington in 2010. While reporting is mandatory for some companies with emissions equal to or greater than the State and WCI thresholds, many companies, with GHG emissions lower than the thresholds, voluntarily opt to report their GHG emissions through programs such as the Seattle Climate Partnership and The Climate Registry, which supports mandatory and voluntary reporting. The Washington Department of Ecology, Seattle City Light, the Seattle Climate Partnership and The Climate Registry are jointly hosting a workshop to discuss mandatory and voluntary GHG emissions reporting. The workshop, ???Understanding Reporting Compliance in Cap-and-Trade Systems,??? will help Washington companies understand each of the reporting categories and determine which one they fall into. The Seattle Climate Partnership also will unveil a new reporting tool, which will complement reporting with WCI and The Climate Registry. Understanding Reporting Compliance in Cap-and-Trade Systems Seattle City Hall, Bertha Knight Landes Room 600 4th Ave. October 28, 2008 8:00 am - 12:00 pm The workshop???s panelists will include Jay Manning, Director of the Washington Department of Ecology; Diane Wittenberg; Executive Director of The Climate Registry; and other business and industry representatives. If the total cargo load is not know due to the usage of shared distribution networks, e.g. parcel express shipments, the total cargo load can be estimated as the product of the maximum cargo capacity and the average utilisation rate in the distribution network. At this level of detail expect to encounter the following data requirements: -maximum cargo capacity levels of different vehicles and aircrafts -suitable unit of measurement, most often weight, but at times volumetric weight, pallets, TEU and m3 -utilisation rates within various multi-user cargo networks, e.g. parcel express, air freight, ocean freight I don't have intricate knowledge on how this is being dealt with within the GHG Protocol. The link: http://www4.ncsu.edu/~frey/reports/Frey_Kuo_071004.pdf The report is nearly 300 pages long with lots of detail, but page 48 mentions quick comparisons by mode. If you have ton-miles (or a good estimate), it's a simple multiplication problem to see if that other calculator is in the ballpark of Frey and Kuo's research. Hope that helps. As a first foray into the organic waste diversion sector, the California Registry will host a public meeting to discuss the development of a co-digestion greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction project protocol and wants to invite all interested stakeholders to join us. The meeting will be held on November 13 from 10:00AM to 3:30PM PST at the Standard Hotel in Los Angeles, California. The California Registry is dedicated to the development of high quality, standardized protocols for GHG reduction projects. The Co-Digestion Protocol will provide an accurate GHG accounting methodology for GHG reduction projects that co-digest (alongside manure waste) organic waste streams that otherwise would have gone to anaerobic treatment/disposal systems such as solid waste landfills, anaerobic lagoons, and wastewater treatment facilities. Co-digestion projects will prevent the release of methane to the atmosphere by capturing and combusting methane gas. This kick-off meeting will also provide an opportunity for discussion of other possible project activities related to organic waste diversion since the baseline calculation methodology for co-digestion activities will likely be relevant to other project activities in the organic waste diversion sector. The California Registry would like to encourage all interested stakeholders to join us, including representatives and experts from: ?? the dairy and agricultural industries ?? the wastewater and waste management industries ?? waste diversion and environmental advocacy organizations ?? project developer organizations ?? academia ?? local, state, and federal agencies If you plan on attending, please RSVP to policy at climateregistry.org by November 7, 2008. The publication notes the vulnerability of the sector to climate change and the GHG emissions driven by the tourism industry. According to the report at least 5% of global GHG emissions are caused directly by tourism. The report provides an excellent basis to address the global phenomenon of climate change, as well as to develop practical tools that can be used by tourism policy-makers and managers to foster the sustainable growth of the industry. I understand the bill is seeking 80% below 2005 by 2050, but I am looking for the expected/estimated cost of the total offsets that will need to be purchased to achieve this reduction. Thanks!
